Bohannan 3.0 is Here

Johnson County Democrats at the 2022 Solon Beef Days parade.

On Monday, June 16, Christina Bohannan announced her third run to become the U.S. representative from Iowa’s First Congressional District. Let’s go!

Campaign 3.0 puts her way ahead in the primary race with two other Democrats. The fact she lost the 2024 general election by 799 votes is an indication she could win in 2026 regardless of which Republican advances from their primary.

The midterm election has been a challenge for Democratic voter turnout, yet in a time when opposition is growing to the Republicans in power, we might pull this one off. The recent No Kings rallies are an indication voters are increasingly engaged in our politics. I believe voters will turn out for Bohannan.

Here is the press release I received by email this morning:

Christina Bohannan announces campaign for Iowa’s First Congressional District

Bohannan: “It’s time someone put Iowa first”

Iowa City, IA – Today, Christina Bohannan announced her campaign for Iowa’s 1st Congressional District. Bohannan nearly defeated Mariannette Miller-Meeks in 2024 – and outworked, outraised, and outmatched her, outperforming the presidential margin more than any other Democratic challenger in a targeted race in the country. It was the most razor-thin margin of any Republican re-election of the 2024 cycle. This contest begins right where it ended – the biggest toss-up in the country.

Christina Bohannan said, “Mariannette Miller-Meeks has had three terms in Congress – three chances to do right by the people of Iowa. Instead, she has taken over $4 million from corporate special interests and done nothing but vote their way. And she has put partisan politics over Iowans again and again.  From cutting Medicaid, to siding with DOGE’s devastating cuts to Social Security, to enabling unelected, unaccountable billionaires like Elon Musk – Miller-Meeks has forgotten about us.  It’s time someone put Iowa first.”

Miller-Meeks must explain why she keeps putting Washington special interests first. In just the first six months of her current term, she has:

  • Cast the deciding vote for the extreme plan that will gut Medicaid and make health care unaffordable for more than 100,000 Iowans to pay for a massive tax giveaway to her billionaire donors;
  • Repeatedly voted for the cost-increasing tariffs that will force Iowa families to pay $4,400 more in higher costs per year while 700,000 Americans jobs are lost, and costs are increased for farmers, small businesses, and manufacturers;
  • Joined Elon Musk’s DOGE efforts to cut Social Security, veterans healthcare, education, and law enforcement resources as a proud member of the DOGE Caucus.

It’s time for Christina Bohannan.

Christina grew up in a mobile home, in a rural town of 700 people. When Christina was in high school, her dad got sick with emphysema, and his health insurance was cancelled, forcing her family to choose between paying for his medicine and paying for everything else. She worked her way through school by picking fruit, cleaning trailers, and waiting tables, becoming the first in her family to go to college. After working as an engineer and then teaching at the University of Iowa College of Law for two decades, she took on politics as usual and defeated a 20-year incumbent to represent District 85 in the Iowa House of Representatives.  Now, Christina is running for Congress because she believes we need a government that works for the people, not political parties and Washington special interests.

It’s Official: Bohannan Is In

Christina Bohannan

I want you to hear it directly from me:

I’m running for Congress against Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks. In a moment I’ll ask you to endorse my campaign, but first I want to tell you why I’m running for Congress:

When I think about why I want to represent Iowa’s 1st district, I think of my dad. Dad worked construction – and I can’t think of anyone who worked harder. But when my dad got sick, we almost lost everything, staying afloat thanks to Social Security and Medicare benefits.

My dad isn’t alone. The Iowans I know value hard work, but they’re struggling under the weight of rising health care costs and lower pay. I’m running because Iowans like my dad deserve dignity.

My opponent, Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks, puts her extremist agenda above everyday Iowans. She blames rising health care costs on seniors using their hard-earned Medicare benefits, she supports a national abortion ban with no exceptions, and she stands with the big pharmaceutical companies over Iowa’s working families who are struggling to afford drugs. That’s unacceptable.

In 2022, we came just short of what we needed to win this race, but my dad didn’t raise me to back down – not when our communities are at stake.

If you’re fed up with Washington politicians who shut us down, count us out, and leave us behind, join us. I know the struggle because I’ve lived it. I will be your voice. I will be your champion. Always.

If you’re ready to endorse this campaign and join this movement, please sign here. There’s strength in numbers, and your support early in this campaign will help build our momentum.

Yours in the fight,
Christina Bohannan

Bohannan is a Compassionate, Knowledgeable Leader

Control of the U.S. House of Representatives could boil down to whether Christina Bohannan beats incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s First Congressional District on Nov. 8. I’m voting for Bohannan. You should, too.

I met Bohannan before the pandemic at a coffee shop in Iowa City. My first impression was she was smart and engaged. As I’ve gotten to know her, she proved to be a compassionate, knowledgeable leader: the kind we need in the Congress. She will represent every district resident.

Her opponent made a case to elect Bohannan by going off the deep end once she got to Washington, D.C. Miller-Meeks quickly swallowed the extreme Republican Party narrative hook, line, and sinker. Bohannan remains a normal Iowan. There is value in that.

Like former Congressman Dave Loebsack, Bohannan is a college professor. She is a current colleague with former Congressman Jim Leach at the University of Iowa College of Law. Both have endorsed her. She is a mother and a state representative. What else is there to say?

Christina Bohannan is the Democrat in this race. That may be enough to earn our vote on Nov. 8: a Congresswoman who listens to and acts on behalf of all constituents.

A Case for Bohannan

I first met Christina Bohannan at a coffee shop in Iowa City, at my last political event before the coronavirus pandemic. My first impression was she was smart and engaged. As I’ve gotten to know her, she has proven to be a compassionate, knowledgeable leader, of the kind we need in the U.S. Congress. She will work hard to represent every resident of the First Congressional District. We should elect her on Nov. 8.

Republican incumbent Mariannette Miller-Meeks made the case for electing Bohannan by going off the deep end to adopt the crazy talk of today’s Republicans. Bohannan remains grounded and sensible.

Bohannan is a mother and a state representative. Like former Congressman Dave Loebsack was, Bohannan is a college professor. She is also a current colleague with former Congressman Jim Leach at the University of Iowa College of Law. She has both of their endorsements.

Bohannan is on the right side of issues. We’ve come to a place in society where rational arguments about specific policy positions will have little bearing on the 2022 midterm election. This election will be based, in large part, on visceral reactions people have had to the legacy of the Trump administration, including stacking the Supreme Court of the United States (ex. Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization which overturned Roe v. Wade), attempts to overturn any and all government regulation of the economy (ex. Executive Order to review the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan), and cutting government budgets without fear or awareness of consequences (ex. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017).

Bohannan has plenty more in her campaign kitbag.

For further reading, Bohannan’s biography is on her website. Viewing a recent speech the Iowa State Fair will get readers up to speed on current policy positions. What else is there to say?

She is the Democrat in the race. In 2022, that’s what we need.
