Long-time followers of this blog know I joined The Climate Reality Project, a non-profit organization founded by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore that educates the public about climate change and advocates for urgent global action. Chairman Gore seldom speaks outside the context of the project, so who else do I follow to stay up to date? There are four main people to recommend.

James Hansen is the Iowa native who gained recognition after his 1988 congressional testimony that brought widespread public attention to global warming. Hansen attended some of the same events I did in Iowa City, and although he is now retired, publishes a substack called Climate Uncensored, which is mainly where I read him.

Bill McKibben should be a household name and he’s been everywhere. I heard him speak in Iowa City to a packed house. McKibben is an American environmentalist, author, and journalist who participates in social media and has a regular substack called The Crucial Years. I follow him on Bluesky and on Substack. He is the author of 21 books, beginning with The End of Nature.

Katharine Hayhoe is a Canadian climate scientist who teaches at Texas Tech University, where she is a Paul Whitfield Horn Distinguished Professor and an Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Public Law in the Department of Political Science. She is active on social media and I read her on Bluesky and Substack.

Finally, there is Hannah Ritchie, the Scottish data scientist and researcher who studies global sustainability, climate change, and human development. I first learned about Ritchie by reading her book, Not the End of the World: How We Can Be the First Generation to Build a Sustainable Planet. More than the others, she offers a fresh perspective on climate related problems we face. I read her on Substack.

If we want change from human-caused degradation of the environment we need good information. These people provide that and I encourage you to give them a try!
