Tomato Time 2026

Kitchen counter space filled with tomatoes and other seasonal produce on Aug. 31m 2026

Yesterday, I took four boxes of tomatoes and a few eggplants to our child near Chicago. They have a friend with commercial food processing equipment and sun-dried tomatoes and powdered tomatoes are in the works. I could never get enough moisture out of them with the dehydrator I bought for a buck at a yard sale to make a powder.

In the Midwest, tomatoes are one of the true pleasures of summer and however you get yours, I hope you will make them into part of your life. Also, it is important to remember to have a little fun along the way.

  1. That is a truly impressive amount of tomatoes! Professional equipment should make a big difference and you don’t have to do the work. If you had one, the sun-dried tomatoes and tomato powder would be a good use for the mason jar sealer.

The tomatoes spread everywhere reminds me of my childhood. My mother and grandmother would can tomatoes and tomato sauce, and peaches. They would freeze creamed corn, blacked eyed peas, and lima beans, and English peas. I am sure there are a few things I’ve forgotten. Mother also made blackberry jelly and fig preserves. Her figs preserves were delicious and went great on her biscuits.

I remember helping to lay out the red potatoes in the barn. I’d be sent to get potatoes for dinner. Russet potatoes didn’t grow well and Dad wasn’t one to waste garden space.

Dad and Mom thought it would be a good experience for us to sell tomatoes and corn at the farmers market.

Thanks for a trip done memory lane.
